Playa de Aro, gelegen ten noorden van de Catalaanse hoofdstad Barcelona, is een kustplaats die het hele jaar door ongeveer 10.000 inwoners telt. Het is een goede nederzetting voor zowel vakantiegangers als mensen die op zoek zijn naar een permanente verblijfplaats. De stad is opgesplitst in twee delen: een deel dat uitkijkt over de zee en een deel dat iets landinwaarts ligt. Er zijn talloze kleine stranden die toegankelijk zijn vanuit het deel van de stad dat oorspronkelijk een vissershaven was. Het oudere gedeelte werd gebouwd rond een kasteel en een versterkte kerk, plaatselijk bekend als het Castell d'Aro.
De gemeente Play de Aro ligt aan de Costa Brava, met uitzicht op de Middellandse Zee, ongeveer een half uur van de populaire, bruisende badplaats Lloret de Mar. Het is anderhalf uur van de drukke luchthaven van Barcelona en op vergelijkbare afstand van de Franse stad Perpignan aan de overkant van de Pyreneeën.
